henry cavill leaving witcher

We’re excited that season 3 of The Witcher is finally back, but we’re also sad about Henry Cavill leaving the show. He has been the lead actor in the series, playing the character Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter with supernatural abilities known as The Witcher.

In October 2022, Henry Cavill announced his departure from the show, stating, “I have had an amazing journey portraying Geralt of Rivia, encountering monsters and going on adventures. Unfortunately, I will not be continuing my role in season 4, so I will be setting aside my medallion and swords.”

While we’re eagerly anticipating the new season, we’re curious to know the reasons behind Henry Cavill’s decision to leave The Witcher.

The difference in Vision between Henry Cavill and the writers

It’s no secret that Henry Cavill and the show’s writers have different visions for the future of the series. Henry has openly expressed his love for the original Witcher story from the books and his passion for gaming, with The Witcher, World of Warcraft, and Warhammer 40,000 being among his favorite games.

Former producer and writer Beau DeMayo has mentioned that some of the writers on the show aren’t fans of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books or CD Projekt Red’s games. Showrunner Lauren D. Hissrich has also stated that she prefers not to hire writers who strictly adhere to the source material.

In an interview, Lauren D. Hissrich explained, “When adapting a story, it’s important to be familiar with the original work. However, we didn’t specifically seek out experts solely focused on Sapkowski’s books. Instead, we aimed for writers who would capture the essence of the books and the author’s intentions. It’s also crucial to remember that a TV adaptation can’t mirror a novel exactly, as characters can’t have uninterrupted lengthy dialogues.”

Before the release of season 2, fans got a glimpse of these differences when Lauren shared that Henry had provided her with notes about Geralt’s dialogue.

Conflict in Henry Cavill’s schedule

There was a rumor circulating about Henry Cavill’s departure from the Netflix series The Witcher, which was related to his role as Superman. However, that rumor was quickly proven false.

Initially, fans speculated that Henry was leaving the series to concentrate on the DC Universe (DCU) for the role of Superman. However, this theory was dispelled when James Gunn, the new head of DC Studios at Warner Bros., addressed the matter. He confirmed that Henry would not be reprising the role of Superman, as they wanted to focus on a fresh start and explore Superman’s early stages.
