Peter Keleghan, actor and playwright, was born on September 16, 1959, in Montréal, Canada. Peter Keleghan attended John Abbott College and Concordia University in Montréal before graduating with a diploma from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in England and a BA in English drama from York University in Toronto in 1984.

Despite early advice to quit his chosen profession, he continued with his unique straight-man approach to comedy and rose to become one of Canada’s most well-known actors.

How did Peter Keleghan begin his career?

He began his career at Toronto’s renowned Second City comedy training center and worked as a stage performer before transitioning to television, where he co-wrote and co-starred in The Comedy Mill from 1986 to 1991. He then moved to Los Angeles, where he starred on Cheers, Murphy Brown, and Seinfeld, as well as a reoccurring but brief appearance on General Hospital.

Peter Keleghan arrived in Canada and appeared on Steve SMITH’s series The Red Green Show in 1991. Ranger Gord, the lonely and emotionally distraught forest ranger, quickly became a fan favorite and displayed Keleghan’s softly serious comedic touch.

In Rick MERCER’s Made in Canada, he played the cruel film tyrant Alan Roy, and in Ken Finkleman’s cynical sitcom The Newsroom, he played the outwardly charming and hopeless dullard Jim Walcott. These two shows were nominated for four GEMINI AWARDS for best group performance in a comedy.

Over the next decade, Peter Keleghan earned significant roles in feature films, most notably in Canadian filmmaker Gary Yates’ Manitoba-set Niagara Motel (2006). The dark comedy written by George F. WALKER is about the unexpected encounters of a group of misguided Niagara Falls visitors and was a hit on the international film festival circuit. Keleghan has also appeared in the films Ginger Snaps (2000), Coopers’ Camera (2009), Eating Buccaneers (2009), and GravyTrain (2010).

Peter Keleghan has been in a number of TV shows, including Slings and Arrows, Billable Hours, and The Murdoch Mysteries, in addition to a successful career as a voice actor for radio and animation shows. He appeared as a parent in the sitcom 18 to Life (2010-) as the father of a newlywed 18-year-old son and daughter-in-law.

Peter Keleghan also co-created and performed in Love Letters (2010), a one-hour CBC special based on A.R. Gurney’s 1989 play of the same name. In the Canadian animated series Crash Canyon (2012), he plays Stephanel the Stern, a homosexual French-Canadian who complicates a family’s attempts to accept their new life when imprisoned at the bottom of an Alberta canyon during an unlucky cross-country road trip.

He was responsible for the establishment of Canada’s first credit union, the Creative Arts Savings and Credit Union, which opened its doors in Toronto in 2009. Peter Keleghan received ACTRA’s Award of Excellence in 2009 for his body of work and continuous efforts to support the arts in Canada. He earned the Gemini Award for outstanding actor in a leading comedy role in 2011 for his performance in 18 to Life.
